Making Learning Whole: How Seven Principles of Teaching Can Transform Education by David Perkins
Chapter 6: Learn from the Team
Chapter 6: Learn from the Team
Every once in awhile our Education team at the Philbrook Museum of Art decides to read either a chapter or article together about a topic relevant to our line of work. After reading the material we meet for a hour (or more) and discus what we read and talk about how it applies to our work as an educator and as a staff member. Interested in group learning versus individual learning we decided to read chapter six of David Perkins's book called Learn from the Team.
A Social View of Learning "Thinking and learning always develop in a sociocultural context. We may think of problem solving as very much "in the head," but usually it gets considerable support from interpersonal interactions (conversation, mentoring, critiquing), group enterprises (teamwork, professional organizations, projects), and cultural artifacts (language, computers, writing, desks, books). " | Communities of Practice "Social contact among them [coworkers] creates opportunities for the exchange of craft. Participants naturally talk about what's most on their mind, what they need to know today or tomorrow, or what they found out yesterday or the day before that seemed especially helpful. Considerable learning occurs spontaneously, and it targets the here and now, not some long-term agenda that will reach realization in a year or five years." |
